What is schizophreniform disorder?

Schizophreniform disorder is a mental health condition characterized by symptoms similar to schizophrenia, but with a duration of symptoms lasting between one and six months. It is considered a provisional diagnosis and if symptoms persist beyond six months, it may be reclassified as schizophrenia.

Symptoms of schizophreniform disorder may include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, disorganized or catatonic behavior, and negative symptoms like apathy and social withdrawal. These symptoms can significantly impair a person's ability to function in daily life and may cause distress for the individual experiencing them.

The exact cause of schizophreniform disorder is unknown, but genetic, environmental, and neurobiological factors are believed to play a role in its development. It often appears in late adolescence or early adulthood, but can occur at any age.

Treatment for schizophreniform disorder typically involves a combination of medication, therapy, and support services to help individuals manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life. With appropriate treatment, many people with schizophreniform disorder are able to recover and resume their normal activities.
